How to: H5P for Interactive Content

How to: H5P for Interactive Content

Today we are starting an ongoing series about tools that can be integrated into a learning management system like Unified Classroom. The thoughts behind this series are simple, how do I use a tool, a site, a program, etc… to make my classroom come alive with interactive content. Today we will look at H5P.

H5P is a website-based program that once you sign up for it, you can create next generation, interactive content. The nice thing with the site is that they are free, they have a wide variety of tools that you can create by following just a few directions. The downside is that the analytics are not that great, but you can still practice those skills needed for MCAS.

Step 1: Sign Up for H5P

The first thing you need to do is sign up for an account, which is free at this site: https://h5p.org/access-to-all-content-types by going here you will create any and all types of content that they offer.

Step 2: Create Interactive Content

Once you are logged in you click on Create New Content (It’s the pink button)  They have a huge number of interactive content types, so choose the one you like!

Once this is done, you will go to a new screen where you need to give your item a title and then select which one you would like to use and then follow the directions given to make that item.

Step 3: Get Embed Code

After you have created a piece of interactive content, you need to get the embed code. On the view screen of said content that you created you will see a link for the embed code.

After you select the link then you will need to copy this code.

This process is the same for every type of content.

Step 4: Add Embed Interactive Content Code into UC (or your lms)

  • Navigate to a specific class.
  • Click +Add Content block.

  • Click Embed the Web

  • Paste in the code in the box.
  • Click Next.
  • Give the block a title (which you can then hide by checking the box on the right).
  • You have the option to write a short description.
  • Click on Block Arrangement to set it placement within the page.
  • Click Save.

Wrap Up

At this point you could add a bunch of embed codes to one page to give students the practice they need by adding each set of embed codes into their own block.

This tool is great for creating item types to practice with, unfortunately you cannot embed them with a quiz to get quiz data but it’s a start and in fact is one of the only tools I have seen that allows you to create and practice the next gen type questions for free. Let us know how you are using interactive content in the comments below!
